Biography

George Greenough
photographer

This is not a 'biography' by any means, if anyone wants to know about Greenough there is oodles of information on the Internet, in books, films and magazines...and while George is famous as an inventor of things that have helped the function of surfing crafts, perhaps George is even more well known for his Camera work from Hollywood to short funny home made films...to his famous surfing material.

George Greenough knows cameras. He has been playing with them since he was a child and is still playing with them today, perhaps even moreso.

Greenough was a solid contributor to the Switch-foot publication but also to LOW Pressure Sound System, a musical project involving many film-makers and talented musicians who improvise music to some pretty far-out visual water footage.

This page will be continually updated, and we hope to have some complete interview transcripts up here one day soon. If anyone has any ideas of things they would like to know, about Greenough, and the passing of the guard with information on design, fin dynamics etc, drop us a suggestion, and we will see if we can make it happen.

The Music of George Greenough

Listen to George Greenough

George Greenough is a surfing legend, acknowledged the world over as the man who changed the way we ride surfboards with his very own designs. Designs that were not a rip off of someone elses ideas, but moreso, just a practical reality that turned into a revelation at the time when people were riding heavy longboards built for nose riding.

George Greenough was riding in the tube, with a camera on his back in 1969 and filming it, in the dark. People didnt really start riding in the tube until years later, let alone film their tube rides! Greenough was riding lightweight boards (spoons) under 5 foot long, weighing less than a modern shortboard, when the most high performance surfers were riding boards that weighed 30 pounds and were 9 feet long. It doesnt stop. Greenough doesnt stop. He is still making waves and adding more interesting ideas to surfing, photography, boat designs and anything else that he is interested in.

If we talk the history of surfing, I think most people would have Greenough in their top 5 contributors and possibly the most influential surfer alive today.
