Biography
Mal Sutherland
photographer

Mal Sutherland is underground. A true Queensland pioneer, people do not know about how important Mal is, and that is because he does not like to blow his own trumpet, a humble man. Stories of surfing Kirra in the late 1950's are backed up with some classic shots that will never be seen again. enjoy.
some words from Mal Sutherland that were published in the switch-foot II book.
"Christmas 1959/1960 I got my first camera. Once I got to know the guys from Sydney that were doing the magazines, they asked me if I wanted to take photos for their magazine and be a Queensland correspondent and I said too right, why not. Jack Eden was the first guy, I think SurfAbout Vol one number 3 was my first photo and story that got published. I felt loyalty towards Jack, but was showing Bob Evans movies around the Gold Coast and Queensland. Evo would come up here and ask to see the photos, them take them and print them in Surfing World, but he didn’t put my name on them (laughs). There are quite a few of my photos in the early SW magazines that are un-named."

Mal Sutherland
Old school surfing is 1950's at Kirra and with mal, he is one of the true legends in Queensland surfing history and his heritage around the famed surfing spots such as Kirra and Currumbin are 50 years worth of experience. As time wears on and surfing art and the legends of Australian surfing become further appreciated, i think Mal Sutherland has some really interesting stories to tell. For now, this is classic surfing photography, from an era of innocence, where surf culture was really true blue.
Mal Sutherland has set up many things with surfing, most recently the Gold Coast Surfing Museum. What a stellar job from a giving man.
