its extraordinary music and its sensuous, melodious language. With
voice and seven-string guitar he has performed Musica Popular
Brasileira or MPB (as the genre is known) in a multitude of situations
both as soloist as well as leading his trios and his six-piece band.
Jason Machado will take you on a journey through the exotic world of
Brazilian song "chilled and sophisticated, providing for couples to
slow dance.. perhaps a Brazilian style answer to the Buena Vista
Social Club".. Rachel Langord - The Courier Mail

THE VIEW FROM MADELEINES COUCH - Q Song Award winner 2009

OzBrazilian music at it’s best.

Influenced by the folk and contemporary musical traditions of Brazil,
Madcouch extend a warm welcome into their world with the promise of a
unique musical experience – there is simply no other band in the
country that sounds like this! The group was invited to perform in Rio
de Janeiro in ’08 & wrote many of the songs on their new album while
there. From funked-up forro to old-school bossa-beat, gorgeous
melodies and deeply addictive rhythms, theirs is a joyous and
heartfelt concoction that features the luscious sounds of the
vibraphone & vocals in Portuguese.

“ Your band was the absolute best here…your music is brilliant. I
can’t believe you are not from Brazil!” - Alberto Cancado, Bellingen
Global Carnival 07

“We left your show spell-bound! There is magic all around you guys and
it is an honour to be part of your audience….Thank you again for
creating such incredible music! - Yours in awe,” Deb McMenamin, via
email 09

“I love how you incorporate our culture, sound and soul… you are
awesome!” Ana Oliveira, Olodum, Concert Hall. 08

MALAGUETA

SAMBA PAGODE & FORRO.
(Dancefloor sounds from the Streets of Brazil)

Malagueta (Former Samba4U) is a fresh, young Brazilian ensemble
comprised of musicians from in and around South East Queensland -
Australia. Founding member and band leader Fernando Toshio (São
Paulo-Brazil), reorganized the set-up to include drum set and bass,
and the group has slowly been tightening up its repertoire of
traditional good time Brazilian sounds from the land of futebol,
cachaca, and samba.

The band's sound revolves around the typical dance music of Brazil -
Samba (the most well known rhythmic style), Pagode ('sing-a-long'
samba) & Forró (mostly believed it stands for “for all”) a more
relaxed folk dance rhythm from the North) with additional styles such
as Bossa Nova, Partido Alto, Samba Rock, Choro, Funk & Soul - in a
'samba de roda' format (music played spontaneously by a smaller number
of friends and musicians - rather than a pumping 500 piece Samba
Enredo school at carnival time).

The sounds have the same rhythmic feel of the carnival samba (Samba
Enredo), but include more singing and vocal melodies, which move
alongside the leading melodic instrument - the ‘Cavaquinho’ (a small 4
stringed ukulele). Combine these full bodied, soulful vocals and
melodies with the 'peppery' dancefloor rhythms of samba, forró,
batucada (drum session), funk, samba-rock and axé - this is the sound
of Malagueta.
