Eddie Sawden is a keen surfer himself. Eddie has been taking nice photographs since the 1960’s and his images shed a beautiful feel and acknowledge some classic surfing characters including Ma and Pa Bendall and Snowy McAllister.
Eddie Sawden still shapes nice traditional longboards and surfs as good as many of the young ‘hotdoggers’ of the modern era. Back in the 1960’s he was taking photos and surfing with his brother Bernard Sawden who is featured in many of his classic images. Eddie is a Currumbin kid and back in those days the waves were best just down the road from where the point is today, near the existing Currumbin surfclub.
Eddie continues to attend surfing gatherings up and down the East coast of Australia and often puts on photographic exhibitions of his work. His photographs are available for sale in a variety of options.
We thank Eddie for his images of Peter Drouyn surfing Kirra in the old days, as there are next to no images of Peter Drouyn surfing at Kirra and some say it was a sight to behold. Maybe the best things do go undocumented…
Eddie is still shaping traditional longboards with volan glassjob.
If you want an Eddie Sawden surfboard, he is based in Currumbin...and you can contact us for his phone number.
Photographic prints are available from Eddie at very reasonable prices.
Eddie Sawden has some of the best old surfing photos of Currumbin rock before the road, photos of Cyclone Dyna hitting the rock, early Peter Drouyn images, Wayne Lynch. Eddie is still uncovering his old photos and scanning them, with new content being added here regularly.
